Higher education expansion and gender norms: evidence from China

Abstract This paper explores whether the expansion of higher education can influence attitudes regarding gender norms. I evaluate impact China’s since 1999. The results show that reform has significantly increased educational attainment for both women and men. However, women’s progressive views on roles are negatively affected following expansion. erosion egalitarian ideology be attributed to findings opportunities in labor market worsening relative those driven by married people who live areas with a high male-to-female sex ratio.
